Google BERT will Impact 1 in 10 Queries in Terms of Search Results

Google is making the largest change to its search algorithm (BERT) to better understand natural language, which will impact 1 in 10 queries in terms of results that rank for those queries.

BERT is rolling out for English language first and will expand to other languages in the future.

Let’s Try to Understand ‘What is BERT’

It is Google’s neural network-based technique for natural language processing (NLP) pre-training, which stands for Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers. In simple terms, we can understand that BERT can help computers understand the language a bit more as humans do.

Google said BERT will help to better understand the nuances and search context of words to better match the query and come up with more relevant results. Google said BERT is being used globally, in all languages, and hence will impact featured snippets too.

Example to understand it in a better way-

With BERT, Google can understand a query more like a human to show a more relevant result on a search for “Can you get medicine for someone pharmacy.”

What’s there for SEO

It’s recommended to keep writing content for users like earlier. This algorithm change is Google’s effort to better understand the searcher’s query and matching it better to more relevant results.

All you need to do is to keep track of the changes in your website’s search traffic. If there’s any change, dig deeper into the landing pages that were impacted and for which queries. You may notice that unlike earlier those pages didn’t convert.
